Unlike other fishes, sharks take many years to become sexually mature and produce very few young. As such, they are particularly susceptible to over-fishing. Once depleted, population recovery would take prolonged periods of time, but ONLY IF we relent our currently fierce depletion of shark stocks around the world to meet our demand for consumption. Also known as the "Emperor's dish", shark's fin soup has only been commercially popularised in the last 30 years, and in the last 30 years, consumption of shark’s fin has already caused steep declines of shark population, with some species known to have fallen over 80%. According to the 2010 IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, 17% of the world's 1044 shark species are already threatened with extinction.
